Winter at cove beck, Lakedistrict

Cove beck bridge

Cove beck bridge

This is a picture drawn from a pencil sketch made of the area in the summer whilst on a walk into the Coniston fells. I thought it would look better as a winter scene.

It is painted on Windsor and Newton Cotman Not 140lb paper. The colours used are as follows.

Ultramarine Blue.
Cadmium yellow
Cadmium red
Raw sienna
Burnt Umber
All student quality.

The picture size is 350mm X 245mm to suit a frame of 22" X 16" (500mm X 400mm). As this picture is mostly from my mind I think the most challenging thing (apart from leaving the sky alone when it was still wet) was to control the amount of boulders I put in without getting carried away.

I wanted to create a cold feeling to the picture and felt that adding the warmth of the sky on the raised middle ground against the mainly white foreground would do this I hope this has been achieved.

Winter Cove at Lake District

Hi Rob:
Great sky and background mountains....although the white triangular area in the mountain lines up too much with the stream.....maybe you could break up the white a bit.The mountain range each side of the bridge could be more positive to bring it forward and would push the background mountains back.
Snow, bridge, stones, sloping banks....great job!
You could possibly make the front stones a darker, warmer value to bring them forward. Just my thoughts :o)

Lovely Scene

Beautifully painted scene. I especially love the sky. The only criticism I would make is that the bridge seems too central. Altering the composition so that the bridge is slightly more to one side would greatly improve the effect of the picture.

Boulders
by: Dorothy

Hi Rob well you certainly have the cold feeling in the picture very well,
however I feel that there are too many boulders, and the mountain in the background is direct in line with the river so one feels as though you are being led straight though the picture and out the top. I don't have any idea how to alter this, if indeed you want to that is,kelvin but I'm sure someone more experienced than I will be in soon
