Divine Intervention

Divine Intervention

This was done on Sandpaper, and is 22 x 18. I used a combination of soft and hard pastels and pencil for detail.

I drew this in stages then took a photo and used Adobe Photoshop to experiment to see the effects of doing something different at each stage. By doing this, I could experiment with different colors on my computer before actually using them. I am actually still adding the final effects of the lighting to finish the painting.

I would say my inspiration came from the sketches I made on the back of the programs from church. It seemed the sermon inspired me to want to draw a woman praying. I used bits and pieces of several reference pictures for the composition.

The hardest part was the flames and lights. I had to use more workable fixative than I would like to in order to obtain the contrast. I should have allowed space on the paper to allow for the lighter shade but the lighting was an afterthought and was on top of the darker shades.

I enjoy the serenity it brings me. I also discovered a new tool by taking a photograph and loading it into Adobe Photoshop for experimentation.

I have never publicly sold my pastels but thought maybe I would at some point.
