Background
by: Carolyn

Thank you Rosie for your comments. The background is simply pale yelow with a little mauve on the bottom right & a tiny bit on the bottom left to carry it through and again top left. As it is not easy to blend colours on velour paper, I used a firmish watercolour brush and blended using circular movements.
If I am putting an abstract backgroud in I try to put it darker against light and light against the darker bits and blend it all together.

Back ground
by: Rosie

Hi, Wonderful painting. I paint animals too, but I have the most trouble getting the background right. Some times I put no backgroung in at all! just let the painting do it but I would love some advice on this no one seems to mention this subject and I do think it is inportant to the finished painting.

Thank you

Thanks Joliza & all for your very kind comments about Bertie.
I mostly do animal portraits on velour paper having first done a detailed drawing in order to get to know my subject. I build up in fine layers always in the direction that the fur grows. Depth in the fur is quite easy when using velour paper because of the pile.

texture
by: George

I love the effects you have done here you can actually scense the feel of the dogs fair as the texture is so realistic you just want to grab him and give him a squeeze, fantastic i love it.
