It is best when using fixative to only use it during the painting process and use what is known as workable fixative.

It is a way of building up more layers of pastel, but try to avoid using fixative at the end of the painting process because it can dull and darken the colour and you lose the fresh and bright colour that is the essence of pastel.

It is better to hold the painting upright and tap the back to knock off any loose particles of pastel.

I completely agree. I only sprayed one pastel painting on completion. It was black paper and a rabbit in brown/cream and the rabbit virtually disappeared off the paper!! Never again.
