Trev
by Jan Byrne
(Runcorn, UK)
This is a portrait of my brother, Trev. It was done as a Christmas (2007) present for Mum.
I used Saunders Waterford Hot Press watercolour paper, 1/4 imp, 300gsm. Mechanical and clutch pencils of various grades, from 3H to 4B.
The approximate size of the actual drawing is 9" x 12".
I've been learning how to draw "properly" for about 16 months and am now compiling a collection for Mum of all of the family members. So far she has four portraits, Dad, by brother, Keith, Trev and myself, plus one of my eldest daughter. I'm in the process of drawing my eldest sister at the moment, so that just leaves Mum and my younger sister to do.
Most challenging in this portrait was the beard, trying to get it to look realistic was the easy part, but getting in to look less flat was the hard part.
I'm really pleased with the eyes and the mouth.
If I did this picture again, I would spend more time refining the beard depth and shading.
