Tree Reflecting on Lake

Acrylics on canvas (10" x 8") This is my first painting. I was always interested in paintings, I don't know why but it always intrigued me. I decided that I too wanted to start painting so I went and purchased a cheap canvas for a buck just to get started.

I had a set of acrylic paints and brushes sitting in the basement so that was a start. I had looked at some pictures on the internet of near by places where I live and found one that I wanted to re-create on a canvas.

The only experience I had with painting were some grade 10 art projects with watercolors. Watercolors were not that bad to work with but I wanted to experiment with other paints. I took some techniques from my art class and some from online videos including the ones on this site.

I'm most pleased with how both trees turned out and the water. If I would re-do this painting I would probably work on the sky and the trees in the background more. It was something I really enjoyed creating and I am sure to keep on painting with acrylics and to improve on my skills.

Pleasing to the eye

Good job! The shadow of the tree in the water is great. I like your clouds. Sometimes to blend in clouds I use an small sweeping motion as if I were painting small X's over the entire sky flipping my wrist back and forth. ( hard to explain). You should be very proud of this first painting.

Gorgeous!

This is just beautiful work! I agree about the merging objects. The only thing I would work on is the clouds. This is incredible work for a first painting! I love the difference in color with the water and the sky. I wouldn't touch the trees in the background. They look great just as they are! I think that you did a Great Job on this piece!!!

Great start
by: Audrey

I think this is great for your first painting. My art teacher advised when using acrylics to slightly merge the edges of objects so that they don't look like cut outs. Hope this helps - I'm still practising!

Very Good

For a first painting this is really good. I can't offer any advice as I'm new to acrylics myself, but you're definitely on the right road!
