Tiger Eyes

by Jessica

This was done on smooth black paper, with watercolor pencils. It's about 8x10 in. I love drawing eyes, because they offer such a good opportunity to practice capturing depth. This was one of my first experiments with watercolor pencils, and overall I was pretty happy with how it turned out.

I'm not completely satisfied with the nose, though. Technically, the nose should be lower on the face, but it looked weird just fading out, so I added a hint of the nose. It still has some major problems, but I figured I should just leave well enough alone!

No Problem
by: Egbert from the Philippines

There is no problem with the nose, since it was not the theme of your art... it was the eyes, am I right?

You could cut them down...just focus on the eyes of the tiger... and the viewer will never mind that nose, but the eyes...

I think it was very very well done!!!
Congrats!

Very Good
by: John

I think you did a great job. Sorry if you are unhappy with the nose. Nothing bugs a person as much as that feeling that "something" is not quite right. After a long period of observation I realized that the length and position of the tip of the nose is dependant on the tilt of the head. the position of the eyes and what the their focus on also relates to head postiion.
Since you feel the nose is foreshortened, that would indicate that the head is tilted upward. Perhaps lowering the pupils in the eyes to direct the gaze directly at the viewer would make you fell better about the overall composition. Just a thought, I'm an amatuer

Well done. I think you have done a fabulous job! I love painting animals (and just recently, humans too) and I agree with you regarding eyes... I love finding that depth in the eyes and I think you have captured the depth in this tiger's eyes beautifully. I wouldn't change a thing about your painting. I think it's perfect!!

Hi Jessica,

As I am struggling with a similar painting in acrylics, I know how difficult it is. I have problems with the nose too.
But I think you succeeded very well.
I hope my tiger will be as good as yours, when it's finished.
