Simply keep another piece of white scrap paper by the side of your art work, to test colours first.

With this tip, you can check what a colour looks like before you add it to your picture.

Recording pigments used
by: Joyce Clark

I do this and sometimes I also chose a little larger piece of watercolor paper on purpose so that I have free margin(s). As I paint, I test colors there and label/name the final choices. Then when the picture is finished, I can keep it like that for a record of what colors I used. Or I can trim it off and file away with the name of the picture at the top. This way if asked to do another, I know where to start color-wise.

other paper

Use the same scrap of paper, you are using for you art piece. Other wise it will not show the same. Mark the mix with a pen, of the colors you used.
