questions re: pastels on suede mat board NEW
by: Anonymous

Susan,

Yes, suede mat board is very exciting to do pastel painting and coloured pencil too.

Gemma Gylling's coloured pencil work on matboard is spectacular. She also works with pastels.
She has a lovely website and blog with lots o f tips.
Leslie Harrison's incredible pastel work is worth looking at too.
They both have websites and blogs.

This will help you a lot, I know :)

questions re: pastels on suede mat board
by: Susan

I just discovered suede mat board by accident and love painting it with soft pastels. I'm at the NPS gathering in Fort Casey on Whidbey Island (where I live) this weekend, and none of them had ever heard of working with it. They loved it, though. How do I know if it's archival? Where's an inexpensive place to buy it? How best to frame it? Does it need spacers? What are the drawbacks besides not being able to blend on it? Is there anything else you can tell me?

Suede Mat Board piece is Wow
by: ArtistMom

Your piece so fabulous. I have played with pastels but seem to prefer my watercolours/ Acrylic. You did a fantastic job with your medium on suede mat board. Thank you for sharing your wonderful idea and gift.

Mat

Velour accepts more layers than Suede Mat-board and the Suede is four time more expensive.

If you have a reasonable source for the Mat-board, please share it with us.

Thanks

Velour paper can be bought at the jerry's or mister art

I love that landscape.
by: Robert Sloan

Your example landscape on suede mat board is gorgeous. I've used Hahnemuhle velour board and paper, which is archival and has a little more pile. It's very good for pastels as long as I'm not trying for very fine detail or trying to do much with hard pastels or pastel pencils in it.

Does the suede mat board accept details easier than velour board?
