Strolling the Pier

by MonteF
(Florida)

Acrylic on Canvas, 18x24, After painting in the skyline, water and Pier, I got stuck not knowing what to do with the foreground, so I had to step away from it for a couple of month.

Then one day last week I decided to add the fisherman, couple of days later, the idea of a family walking the pier seemed like a good idea and the figure in the distance was added just to help with perspective.

That is supposed to be a full moon rising and the light coming in from the left side of the painting, being reflected from a setting sun that is out of view. Not sure how well this I achieve what I was aiming for but I am generally pleased with the overall composition.

Also if you take out the moon, the painting would work fine as mid-day instead of nighttime. The shadow suggest overhead lighting, slightly to the left.

Very ART DECO! There is great potential here. Much demand for this type of painting.

strolling the pier
by: Angeline

Hi Monte

Very nice scene, it reminds me of my holidays. Last year I visited Florida and I strolled several piers at sunset.

I agree with Karla, that you should add some shadows. When the sun is going down, the shadows become much longer.

Draw an imaginary line from the sun to the top of the lanterns or the people, etc.
Where this line is coming down on the street, there is the place the shadow ends. I hope you understand what I mean.

And another point: If you look at the long orange fence, there is no shadow on the floor at all, so I think you should add that too.
It will make your painting even better than it is already.

So, those are my only remarks, I hope you don't mind me saying this.

Over all it's a beautiful painting with nice colours and a warm atmosphere.

Keep painting!

I love the fisherman and his pole!!! You should be satisfied the only thing I might add is a little more shadowing on the pier. I see some but if it is evening and the light is coming from the left I think they might be a bit stronger. I don't know I am a fairly new painter, but when I first looked at the painting it appeared a summer day till I saw the moon and read your description.
Overall it is great and has great detail.
Karla
