Solitary Mountain

by Gary
(Texas)

This mountain sketch was drawn on an 8 x 5 inch Cotman Water Colour Pad (140 lbs. NOT). I used Derwent Sketching Pencils HB, 2B and 4B, and Derwent Water soluble Sketching Pencils HB, 4B and 8B. For some reason I have been drawing mountains lately. Maybe it's a form of consolation for the land around here being so flat! The challenge was in reducing something large and imposing like a mountain to an 8x5 pad. Next time maybe I'll put in more trees. The tree on the right is not really so slanted---it just looks that way in the photo. I like the way the tones turned out.

Using color
by: Gary

Mary---I sometimes do use color. But lately I have been concentrating on perspective, light, and shadow, so I reduce the complexity by using monochrome (usually pencil or charcoal...sometimes pen). Thanks for your encouragement!
