Scarborough donkey

Scarborough donkey

I started painting at Christmas 2007 and have produced several paintings but have not shared them with anyone - I would therefore appreciate any comments good or bad.

The paper is Arches watercolour 140lbs rough. The medium is watercolour and approx 270mm x 190mm.

The painting is from a photograph that I took during a visit to Scarborough in North Yorkshire UK. I produced the painting because it reminded me of when I was a young child and a donkey ride was the highlight of the summer holidays - also I had never previously painted animals or people.

The most challenging part was actually starting the picture i.e. sketching the figures in location and proportion. I was most pleased with the composition and brightness of colours - which are not so vivid on the photograph.

Please be honest with your comments !

I really like this painting. It has lots of movement and you get a real sense of the trust the rider is putting in the man leading the donkey. Very nicely painted, and good colours.

Wow, this is amazing for early work, my hat is off to you. The capture of details, folds in the cloth etc., just exquisite.

Reminiscence

Hello,
Immediately I saw this painting I was reminded of Jack Vitriano. Are you a fan?
The bright colours and the absence of background just make the picture for me.
Excellent job for watercolour.

Immediately get a job as an illustrator... you're that good. If you started late you surely made it. Hardest thing is painting people and animals and you did it.

Wow!
by: Tina Nichols

John,

This is awesome! Great realism, your subjects look very life like. Great job on your first animal/people painting. I was amazed that the medium was water color, I would have guessed it was acrylic or oil. I like your painting very much!

When I first looked at your picture my first thought was "wow - how professional" ! Then I read that it was your 1st animal & people painting.
You certainly have a lot of talent and you should definately paint more animals and of course people!! Well done.

I like the way you have left the background out and the colours really stand out. Good attempt.
