Wet canvas with acrylic and salt

Paint Breathing

Thank you Dave,
I did assume a thicker layer of paint that surely would have blocked any air exchange. I'd love to see some of your pieces you have done this way.

I have been doing my own experiments using thin layers of acrylic paint over years-dry oil paint, with areas being sanded for both finished effect and to allow the oil paint to breathe. The first piece I tried this on was finished 3 1/2 years ago and shows no bad effects. But of course, the real test of these experiments are important for hundreds of years from now, not the near future.

Oil on Acrylic

Gesso is an Acrylic water based primer used on a blank canvas to help either Oil or Acrylic key to its surface so Oil or Acrylic paint will adhere to its surface

Thankyou for your comments Jeanne, I have found when making the sky for my painting 'Tango on the Beach' I literally made the clouds out of mixing red and ultramrine sprinkling it in salt allowing to partially dry then washing it under the tap with a sponge... the acrylic stains the canvas but still leaves it able to breathe (I don't plaster the acrylic paint on)

Oil over Acrylic -correction

Using acrylic paint under oil paint will block the necessary breathing through the back of the canvas. That means those paintings made in this method, which should be revealed to the customer at the time of purchase, will degrade more quickly. It would be a shame if your painting was valued by so many people that it should have stood the test of time, but didn't.

Also, you can paint acrylic over oil if the oil paint is very dry -meaning several years dry. I do that while making sure the front of the painting can also breathe.
