River Rapids - Acrylic on Canvas

by Pearl
(Australia)

Acrylic on 280 gram Canvas.

Size: 230x310 millimeters
I used a photo for reference. I wanted to capture the movement of the water and the sense of being there.

This was my first attempt at painting water I found it difficult to acheive the same water movement as that depicted in the photo.
I am pleased with the rocks but if I were to do it again I would change the light coloured rocks in the foreground. I think they are out of place with the surrounding rocks, even though they are in the original photo.

Thank you for looking,

cheers Pearl

just right as it is

Hi Pearl just happened upon your painting, the rocks look just fine, and the water is brilliant, if this was your first attempt at water, the next one will be super.

Please don't change a thing....It's perfect, sometimes what we imagine it to be and how it actually is, is sooo different. This is how it should be especially if you were using a photo as a guide.
You did excellent with first time water.....it makes me feel like I want to cool my feet in it.
Great job!

Very nice water movement!
by: Vicki B.

You did an excellant job with the composition, the moving of the water and the presentation of the rocks. The colors you have used are very nice, you kept it in a small range of color, not bringing all the colors of the rainbow into it. Nice job.

Thank you all for your advice.
by: Pearl

Thanks Mops, that is the feeling I was hoping to convey. We are in drought here at the moment so any water, even a puddle, looks inviting. Thanks also to the others who left comments it all helps in the learning process, and has been added to my art journal for future ref.
Cheers P

River Rapids
by: Mops

Hi Pearl:
Love this painting....can hear the sound, and feel my feet on the cool slippery rocks. I think the light coloured rocks in the foreground are balanced by the grey rock top left. I might have changed the shape on one of the light rocks to match the more angular rocks, and maybe put a dab of the red-brown colour so that it is joined to the rest of the painting.
Having said that I think your painting is excellent.

Great Job
by: Karla

I do believe you captured movement in your water, Great Job! I like the rocks, all rocks are multicolored, I think the shape of the light colored rocks is the issue not the color? They are not rough like the other rocks in the area. But the picture is still outstanding! Karla USA

You Know What You're Doing!

I think the rocks in the foreground are O.K. The bright rocks on the bank beneath the shrub in the background look a bit loud. I understand the effect you were looking for with the water. I get the impression that you very carefully copied your photo so could it be possible that the photo did not show all the mist, foam, and spray of rushing water crashing into solid rock?

I have to admit, your painting looks better than many of the photos I take. Eventhough that little eddy in the foreground is not the subject, If you had shown just a little more of it, there would have been a nicer contrast between the rapid and the still.
