Push and Pull backgrounds Girl on Beach another Example of Push and Pull

In this rose painting I painted water on the background and only when the shine had gone I painted in shapes of the back ground roses (as the paper was damp they ran and looked out of focus.)

But what is important is where the petal is light I went darker in the backgound and where the edge of the petal was dark I went lighter in the back ground. Called a push and pull. Making your backgrounds count.

Water drops
by: Shirley

To paint water drops one needs to build up the colours because water is transparent the colour under needs to be the colour of the petal but there will also be shapes and shadows in the drop itself and a highlight. I mask in the pure highlight then do a pale petal or leaf wash mask in those shapes then a final dark wash. remove masking fluid and use a silver pencil to gain some sharp broken edges to get a watery shine. Remember one needs sharp edges for the drop to look watery yet transparent.

backgrounds

Backgrounds are as challenging as the object you are painting!!! They can certainly make or brake the painting. and a big question...paint the background first or second. thanks you for the push pull instructions. I have recently looked at Ann Blockley's work and now have her books and DVD. this is a similar approach and I love it. Thanks.
