"Penny" - Oil On Canvas

by Jim Renshaw
(Warrington)

Penny

Penny

Oil on canvas paper 11" x 14". A very alert and active dog which I tried to capture from a photograph. The foliage took quite some time to do but I think it worked quite well. The brick colour came out quite close to the original as well.

Composition-wise maybe I should have found somewhere else but this was very difficult with a dog that will not stay still.

Just one flaw
by: Iva

This is an exceptionally well-painted portrait of Penny. I have a problem looking at how tight her collar appears. If it didn't turn up at the ends, but rather went straight across, it would appear as though it was partially covered by fur. As it is, her neck looks disproportioned to the rest of her body. In real life, she would have choked. Being an oil, you could probably still correct it. I really like all of the detail work, especially the foliage. Well done.

True Westie
by: Pamela

An additional note. The body of the Westie is just fine, considering he has a leave drapped around the neck, I can see the perspective of the body, although if anything the leaf may be a touch big, or maybe wrong direction, but I do see the body through the leaf... :)

Nicely Done
by: Marianne Coyne

Jim,

I am not very good on computers so I think I accidently sent an unfinished comment - sorry.
I was saying that your composition works well.
Open spaced background, yet intimate in the foreground - tells a story.

Keep painting,

Marianne

Hi,

I really like this work but agree with my namesake from Cambs that the body is just a little thin but otherwise I can't fault it. I particularly like the fur on her paws and her expression is excellent.

Totally awesome!
by: Jeannie

Jim,

Just precious, your capture of this little doggie. Your foliage looks so good, it begs to ask IF it's a photograph!

Would I be wrong to ask if the darker splotches on brick are wet paw prints?
