Painting on roof slates

Many years ago while at work a friend brought in an acrylic painting that his wife had done on a slate of two red squirrels on a tree trunk.
At this particular time things financially were tough, so I aquired several old oblong roof slates.

I decided to shape them oval using an old metal block and gently chipping the slate with the ball end of a hammer until I had the shape required.I filled any nail holes with fibreglass filler then smoothed off the whole slate with emery paper.Starting with the course and finishing with fine. The slate needs to be primed e.g. white or black jesso. You can sketch using a metal scriber to give you a fine line. After painting your slate, purchase a spring plate bracket for wall mounting to hang up your slate.
