Snow shading

Snow shading

I think you can see that I used just two colours in this painting.....burnt sienna, cobalt blue and maybe a little ultramarine blue.....been a while so I'm not quite sure.

The main learning lesson here was to shade the snow effectively. I dipped a one inch flat brush in water...then dipped one corner of the brush in a blue shade and made a curve shape on the white paper. The side of the brush with the paint makes a hard edge and the part where there is only water on the brush makes a soft edge. I'm still working on this!!!

The house was wiped out to add a little interest.

I love this painting... it really makes you feel the cold starkness of the landscape. Very well done.

oh Mops , you have so captured our winters ...even though I would rather not have any reminder of the months ahead . I use w alker which is not snow friendly ...grin . I do love that I can hiberate and paint summer stuff .

Your Snow is better than mine
by: Bonny

Mops, I think your snow turned out much more realistic than mine in "Trees in the Snow". I'll keep that in mind about the hard and soft edges.
Love the painting! It so peaceful...

Hello Mops,

By using those two colours, the warm burnt sienna and the cool blue, you expressed a real wintery athmosphere. I like it very much!

Greetings,
Angeline

Hi Mops,

Love your painting, I like working with a limited palette. I'm dying to try out your idea of using only transparent shades but at the moment my time is being taken up with a commission of a collie dog from a photo. This is for a Christmas gift so I'm kinda working to a deadline.

However, I am getting there, I think!!!!!!

I love this painting. It is so well balanced. Your use of only two colours is awesome. The lesson on how to achieve the snow effect has been very useful as I have never been able to paint snow, can't wait to try it .
