Memories in the Sand

by Karen Meacham
(Clarksville, TN)

This acrylic on 16" x 20" canvas was inspired by my desire to give one of my best friends a meaningful birthday gift. Dianne's husband, Harry, had passed away three years ago and she longs for the days on the beach at Gulf Shores, Alabama where they spent so many wonderful times together.

My biggest challenge was making the sand look somewhat like sand and not flat. I was trying to achieve the feeling of a couple walking off into the sunset together. I think I am most pleased with the sunsetting sky and if I were to paint this piece again I would try to improve on the footprints and the writing in the sand.

My friend seemed very pleased and it made me happy to present it to her. I have only been painting for about a year and know that I have much to learn.

Although I agree that the footprints do show up too much, the sentiment of the painting negates this aspect in my eyes. The sky is fantastic and you acheived you goal with the sand. I like this very much!
