Well... once I purchased approx a pint of latex Tear Mender to repair torn clothing, or to apply to patches. I tried using it as masking fluid, and it worked quite well. Do a search on internet for "Tear Mender". In reality, it is simply liquid latex.

Hmm.. I wonder if knicking a rubber tree plant would yield enough liquid latex for a painting???

Hi, Copydex is made by Pritt and is a solvent free adhesive. It is suitable for use a range of different materials from paper to metals and texiles.
When I have used it instead of masking fluid, I put a small blob onto a plate and carefully drip almost the same amount of water onto it mixing as each droplet lands making sure that it not too runny - if it does just add another drop of copydex.
It rubs off the watercolour paper when dry just like masking fluid. I have not tried leaving it on for days but that is not to be advised with masking fluid anyway.
