If you have access to a pond of lake Canadian Geese hang around, when they molt their feathers they are about one foot long.

Snatch up a handful from the ground, take a razor and cut on an angle and you have a great quill pen.

Works better or best on smoother papers, although if careful you can used rougher stock.
