Lucas - Pastel on Paper

by Jim Renshaw
(Warrington)

Soft pastels and pastel pencils. I'm new to pastels, this being my third attempt and I find that the type of paper used plays a very important part. Getting to grips with achieving fine lines can also be daunting at first. I was originally going to paint Lucas in oil but took the plunge and found the soft effects of pastels very pleasing.

amazing
by: LINDA

I love this picture. it looks so real. I have just started experimenting with pastels and would love to create something as soft as this. Any tips on creating skin tome and the hair tone? I struggle too when doing the mouth, my 'teeth' always pick up colours from surrounding shades.

Better than a Photograph
by: Bill, Oldham

So, you are new to pastels !!

This is a brilliant portrait and, because you have total control over the background, the result is better than any photograph could be, and you have caught the essence of the childs character.

Although you maybe like me, (very self-critical), I hope you are pleased with this portrait.

Carry on using pastels, the future looks really exciting for you.

Photographic quality
by: Carol R Newman

I think this is a wonderful portrait. . . . it could be a photograph; in fact, I had to look twice to make sure it wasn't.
This is exactly what I want to achieve with my pastel portraits. I love the soft, gentle shades of colour you have achieved with this medium. Wonderful skin tones. In particular I think the T-shirt is a very intricate piece of work and could have looked so false but you have captured it perfectly . . . as I said, it looks like a photograph. Excellent!
