Great Picture
by: Dorothy , Carluke

This painting is super from the detail on the hem of the lady's skirt to the shine on the wood of the sitar? the fold of the dresses etc., I go go on for hours just looking at it.

Like Mops says it is like the work of the "old masters" I, like the others are curious to know how long it took you to paint this wonderful picture.

It is really good work, but it would have been better if you would tell us how you would draw this painting so that others can draw it as well.

Thanks

Thank you all for your encouraging complements. I reckon many of you are eager to know more about this painting, to start with I started working on this on my final year (i.e. 7th year), and took more than three months to complete it.

Here are a few tips about oil painting I would like to share.

Oil painting involves a process that must be understood to be able to paint better.

--From Start To Finish Without Frustration

--Thinking Like An Oil Painter--
In other words, it is not drawing. The materials used to make oil paintings carry some rules with it that you must know.

Accept the fact that you have to think like an oil painter.

An oil painter must see the world differently than most people.
This is the first thing that you must learn.
Knowing how to think like this is the process of translating what you see into paint. Discover how to do this, and you are halfway there.
Next, you must learn the process of oil painting.
From beginning to end.

Imagine knowing what to do step by step?

Never saying to yourself...

'What do I do now?'

Never becoming lost or confused again while painting your paintings.

It's just like anything else you know a procedure to.

You need to know a procedure for making a painting of whatever you feel like.
Another way to learn oil painting techniques is to go to museums and look at the great paintings hanging on the walls and get your answers this way.

A museum will always be your best painting class. The trick is to know how to 'ask' Rembrandt, Monet, or whoever else you
are looking at, for the answers to your questions about oil painting techniques.

Sincerely,
Rofique Hussain
