Mum - Lena

A second attempt in my life time to create a portrait of my late mum. When I was just 16 years old I did a basic portrait of her in oils. I rather liked it but my 5 brothers and sisters found it highly amusing.

This time aged a bit more than 49 I have attempted her again in pastels. Again I am rather pleased with it BUT there is still something lacking. The glare I think is wrong and the fact that I chopped of the top of her head hasn't helped.

Anyway it hasn't managed to put me off, I will attempt her again and hope I capture her true beauty both in her smile and her personality next time. Let me know what you think.

eyes

make sure when you are doing eyes full on that the iris and pupil are drawn as perfect circles even though you will cover some of it with the eye lids and always put in a shadow under the upper lid that will show the lid has depth and also take away the stare look of the subject that goes for human or animal

she is delightful and you have the nack for portraits . Keep doing them. When working from a photo I've found it's best to work only with the information you have . If the top of the head is missing ..so be it . if the is any chanch you can get people to sit for you it is so much better .

Mum

Hi Linda,

I think the face is very well done, especially the highlights. You merged the colours to a nice, fresh skin.

In my opinion it's a pity that you didn't do the same with the blue colour of the dress, it looks as if the dress is not finished.

I think if you add more blue in the dress, without stripes, the painting will be better.

Hope to see more of your paintings.

Lovely

I think you did a fairly good job. I feel, looking at the portrait, that your mum meant a lot to you, that she was a beautiful, warm person. You really transmit this feeling.
It's a pity, of course, that you chopped off the top of the head, but in general I liked the portrait and your attitude!

Right eye
by: Dorothy , Carluke

Hi Linda,

I think you've done a great job on the portrait of your Mum. She looks a happy and loving person.

You said you think there is still something wrong and I've looked and looked and the only thing I can suggest to you is that the right eye is too close to the corner. Try moving it out so that the centre of the pupil of the eye is in line with the corner of her mouth.

Regards,

Dorothy

love the face muscles -but i think there is something lacking in the eyes they tend to look a bit cross eyed.
