Learn To Paint With Acrylics
Painting Red Wharf Bay - Part 1
This is the first tutorial in this learn to paint with acrylics mini series...
If you haven't seen the "Getting Started With Acrylics" video, which covers the brushes, paints, palettes and basic set up, it's best to watch that first.
In this first installment, we begin to paint a habour-side scene. It's a lovely little place called Red Wharf Bay in Anglesey. The tide is out and several boats sit stranded in the habour.
The first step in any acrylic painting is the underpainting. In this case I covered the entire painting surface (watercolor mat board) with a coat of thin yellow ocre acylic paint.
This undertone will help to pull the whole painting together and give a subtle glow that will show through the subsequent layers of paint.
The underpainting also helps to seal the mat board and prevent it from buckling. I painted both the front and back.
Once dry, I began to sketch out the scene with watered down ultra marine acrylic paint. As you'll see, I also blocked in areas of the picture to help me judge the correct tone later on. No need to get detailed or fussy with your sketch. It's about composition and balance at this stage. We'll be adding detail later on...
