I am always looking out for a new, better way to keep dirty brushes nearby without a mess. Last week, I was unpacking some of my Mom's old stuff, and I found a shallow sterling silver bowl/dish that was used for cut flowers. It had a criss-cross silver holder that would hold the flower stems in place. So, of course, I thought brushes, instead of flowers. Gone from rice to sterling....paintin' in style!!

What about the theory that one should not stand dirty brushes with the bristles up, the remaing paint runs down into the heel of brush?

I am always loosing the round tops of my brushes, so now I cut drinking straws to the required size and they look nice and clean.

I'm sorry, I should have specified that it is the brush handle that goes into the rice to keep the brush upright, and yet out of the way. I had tried the brush buddies.....the bars with the places scooped out to lay down brushes. However, the brushes would somehow end up on the floor, getting oil paint on everything all the way down. In fact, even though oil painting has its own necessary expenses, I have found that the most expensive thing for me has been the clothes I have ruined.

I have visited a few building sites and collected 4x6 and 6x8 remnants. With a forstner bit in my drill press I have made holes of various sizes for different size brushes. These "brush caddies" are too heavy to slide around or accidentally knock off my drawing table like the cup ideas. Being the clutz that I am this works great.

I use a small paint roller tray and fill the paint area with water. This way the brushes can be laid down without the brushes touching the end so they don't lose their points. You can buy these small ones anywhere now and they only cost about £1 and I use the roller sponge on a piece of dowling as a mahl stick - it fits perfectly and comes to pieces for transporting.
