June 2008

This is the second portrait I've done of June, my sister. Unfortunately we lost her to cancer a few years ago. This is a birthday present for Mum.

It's done on Saunders Waterford 300gsm Hot Press paper, size 11 x 15 inches. 5h,2h,hb,2b mechanical and clutch pencils and 6b wood cased pencil.

I must have had a bad batch of paper as I had to restart this three times!!! I'm still not too pleased with how it turned out, so I've decided to try some different papers until I find one I really like.

Sometimes we are our worst critics!!! I am sure you love her so much you wanted it to be perfect, and the paper got in your way. Listen to these people, and know that you have touched us all!! You can try again with other paper, but here you have HER SPIRIT!! If you want to try again, put this one away and cherish it, keep it safely, you will need it later. If you come up with what you consider better, let your Mum choose which one she wants, and you keep the other. Both will be magnificent!! Your talent will make you famous!!

Amazingly well done
by: ALICE DUNCAN

I'm 86, using art as therapy to help recover from two strokes and heart surgery. Your talent amazes me because it's so real. I just discovered Bob Davies and was trying to get to know more about him and his lessons. I am thrilled at what I have found. If his students do as well as you have, they will embarrass the pros.

What a fine portrait of your late sister, I'm sure your mother will love it. Her eyes look into your soul. Sad that she was taken so young, you will see her again. Regards Joyce

I love your drawing, her skin and eyes looks so real. Sorry to hear that she is no longer with us but I am sure your Mum will love your picture of June.
I recently came across Saunders Waterford 200gsm hot press which is a lovely smooth paper and not so heavy as the 300gsm, ideal too for watercolours.

I am very sorry to read of your loss, it must have been a very emotional experience to produce a likeness of someone you have lost that was so close.
You have done a terrific portrait of her I'm sure she would have been proud of you, take care and best wishes for a brighter, happier future.
