JACK

by Dorothy
(Carluke, Scotland)

Jack was painted using soft pastels, pastel pencils and conte sticks for the detail. The painting measures approx. 15" x 18" and was done as a commission for a Christmas Gift.

I found Jack's eyes and face very challenging due to the fact that the photographs I was given were poor quality and very small. They were also taken indoors using a flash which added to my problems with his eyes.

However, all things considered I am quite pleased with the result and more to the point the lady who commissioned it was delighted.

What have I learned? - not to accept poor quality photographs.

Wishing everyone Good Health and Happiness in 2008.

Excellent work! I tiny white highlight in the eyes might bring them to life a little more....but that's just my thought.

Hi from one Dorothy to another, you have done extremely well with this portrait of Jack, the first pastels I did of dogs were from poor quality photos so I know what difficulties you had, I may post them on here later

Hi Mops,

I agree that the highlight is not showing up on the photo very well the eyes are weak but it did look a bit better in reality.

If truth be told Mops this was a chore and not a pleasure. I had to buy a magnifying glass to see the eye - the proverbial nightmare.

I should have said sorry I can't see the eyes but I did not want to let the lady down and she said she had no other photos.

Never again will I work from poor photos.

Thanks,

Dorothy
