How to Draw a Mouth

Part 6 of this series shows us how to draw a mouth accurately.

In my opinion, the two most important individual features in getting a good likeness in a face are accurate eyes and a correctly drawn mouth.

Although this video shows one example, remember, mouths come in all shapes and sizes, so it's important for you to get as much practice as possible. If you're unsure about getting family or friends to sit while you sketch their mouths, look through any magazine or book pictures - or on the net - and copy what you see.

You probably won't get it right first time, every time, but you'll gradually start to notice people's faces as being of a certain 'type' - oval, pear-shaped or whatever. Then you'll start to pick up on several 'standard' shapes for things like mouths, as well as eyes, ears, noses and so on.

When you do this automatically, you're well on the way to getting a good likeness in your next portrait...
