How to Draw a Man's Body

Artist Jo DePear shows you how to draw a man's body in this excellent video.

Drawing the human body is made much simpler when you use some simple ratios. You won't always have to draw these ratios out but it helps to have a go until you get a good feel for the various proportions.

You can make the technique in this video even easier by thinking in terms of basic shapes. It's something I talk about a lot but it's worth repeating because it's such a important guideline to remember.

So when you're adding the arms for example, instead of trying to draw the various contours straight off, draw a rectangular block for the arm and a square block for the hand. Add the various curves and intricacies later.

There's a terrific figure drawing e-book free to all subscribers of our newsletter (subscription is 100% free), which has dozens of sketches of the human body in natural poses. I highly recommend you copy some of these sketches - it's THE best way to master the art of drawing the human form.
