Hi Cats,

Thank for your comment. Interesting about Future floor polish. I will have to try it and see what happens. I do worry about a painting cracking with age. So I will see if other artist have tried this with their paintings.

I also have heard of using Dawn but it has to be the original one. That my make sense.

I've heard of using Future Floor Finish, and it extends the drying time by 10 or 15 minutes, and for better flow, I've heard of the SMALLEST drop of Dawn soap.

I use Liquitex heavy Gesso or Liquitex super heavy gesso. In doing a background I usually wet my canvas or paper with water then I apply a good amount of gesso to my canvas as a base, then I spray it with a light mist of water to keep it wet. I then blend in my background via color. Gesso, helps to keep acrylics wet for a longer blending time.

The only problem with Gesso is that it is not transparent. Gerry Yarnell uses it as a base coat to give a 'wet-in-wet' technique.

If you want a transparent extender try using 'KY' jelly (it works). Just dont use too much in your paint mix. A little goes a long way!

I use Propalene Glycol as well (basically the same chemical, but thinner).

Hope this helps (will probably get a few smilesa as well).

Thanks for the idea - is there a certain brand or type of gesso to use for this or just regular acrylic gesso white or clear?

Thank you Yvette for your tip. I am going to try this. But i have one question. Would it cause any problem if i want to apply varnish? I use oil colors most of the time so i have no practice (or little) using acrylics. I use gesso as first underpainting with oil.

I like the colors you chose for your painting and the composition too.

I love the lifelike appearance in your painting, I am a newbie to all the mediums. I am trying to create a picture of a black and white dog. I don't know how to get the effect of the colors as you have in your bird feathers.

Yvette, This is quite striking. i love the vivid red of the flower. I do watercolors but the more I see of acrylics the more I would like to try them.
