Horse portrait

by John Melhuish
(Teesside UK)

I painted this horse's head shortly after my Scarborough Donkey effort. I do not know if I am cheating or not because I copied it as an exercise from a photograph that I found on the internet. It only took a few hours.

The paper is Bockingford 140lbs NOT. The medium is watercolour and approx 300mm x 230mm. I intend repeating this exercise and attempt to improve the highlights and brushstrokes on the face and neck.

I have also attempted a portrait of John Wayne - again copied from a photograph obtained from the internet - if Bob allows I shall submit that effort at a later date.

HARD

Three stars from someone is harsh for a difficult subject such as the horses head
You have got just the right feel for this .The coat glows and the picture is worthy of being seen in a bookies window

I like your drawing, its very good, I would suggest the coat be shinier and smoother for a more life like appeal. I grew up with horses and I think u should try to capture the sparkle in the eye of the horse a bit more. That is something I've always admired about a horse is their eyes.
