Hat Girl

This was done on printer paper with pencil and erazer, 8 1/2"x11. I did this at work in between customers. It was taken from a photo. I always struggle with the eyes, nose and mouth. I think the hat turned out not bad. I got in a hurry to finish and made her hands to small though, so if I did it again thats what I would change.

Eyes

Hi Brieghdi,

Glad you felt that my comments would help you. I am always a bit worried in case I offend but as you say it is the only way to learn.

Portraiture is very difficult so your doing really well. Try to find a book or a site that gives you the propotion of the head. For example the eyes are set around the middle of the skull and they usually go into the face five times across the width.

Enjoy your drawing and painting it is a great hobby.

Take care,

Dorothy

Eyes

Hi Breighdi,

I think your painting of the little girl is nice and you have good skills but I think you need to pay a little attention to the eyes.

If you can think of the eye as an orb sitting within the skull and then try to capture the roundness of the eye. The eyelid and eye lashes also cast a slight shadow over the top of the eye.

Another small point is that the space between the eye is around 1 eye's width.

Try making these small adjustment and you will see the eye take on more form.

Just a few thoughts and I hope you don't mind me saying.
