GREEK CHURCH

Acrylic on canvas, 70x60 cm.

As you probably will have noticed, I usually paint animals. But this time I made this landscape for the change.

When I visited the isle of Rhodes a few years ago, I saw this beautiful, old little church.

I used the photograph I made as an example for my painting, although I didn't just make a copy, I tried to make a romantic impression of the church.

I made the walls look old and weathered by dabbing them with a sponge:

I started to make a dark underground, then I sponged several colours on it (blue, green, yellow, orange), let them dry and repeated this a few times.

After these colours were dry, I added several transparant white and yellow washings, at the sunny side of the church, in order to make the contrast between sun and shadow.

This really was a challenge, but I am very pleased with the effect.

The background, the trees and the flowers are all painted from my own fantasy.

I hope you like it.
