Most artists tend to use HB pencils when they are drawing. However, this grade can cut into paper leaving permanent grooves....

I prefer to use a very soft pencil such as a 6B and to work very quickly. This latter is very important if you are going to use watercolours to finish the work.

It is also advised to avoid using a pencil sharpener - a sharp knife is better - as this gives a more rounded tip to the pencil, which does not cut into the paper as can happen with a too pointed tip to the pencil.
