Dad's Home Place

by Loretta Hyden
(Prestonsburg, Kentucky USA)

Acrylic on Canvas Panel, 11' 14. I did this painting from a snap shot of my Dad's old home place. Dad's home place or (The McGuire Home Place as it was known) was located on John's Creek before it was known as Dewey Lake in Floyd County, Kentucky. He was born and raised in this house until he had to move out when they put in the man made lake.

My Dad turned 91 on April 1, of this year, April 1 was also his mother's birthday, which he is very proud of. I did this painting in honor of his birthday.

The most challenging part for me was getting the roof to look correct with the little porch on the front.

All in all I am very pleased with how the whole painting turned out, especially the background

Thanks everyone for your comments and the pointers on how my painting could have been better. My Dad absolutely loved the painting for his birthday that year, he passed away a couple months after that, but he did get to enjoy a great birthday.

Yes you should be pleased with it .The background trees are very very good, Buildings can be quite hard to do sometimes but yours turned out quite well. I think the foreground grass could do with a bit of variation to hold a bit of interest but i do like the figures i realy do !

Dad's Home Place

Hi there, I think your painting has a lovely homely feel about it. I still take it personally if someone picks something out of my paintings and tells me it doesn't look right, but I have learnt by my mistakes and am a better artist because of it. Your house looks a little two dimensional. It would've been better if you had painted it from an angle, thus avoiding that flat look. Also, do you see how the apexes look like they are just a facade? They need the roof line to extend out behind them. The trees in the distance look lovely and you obviously enjoyed painting this picture.
