i would value your comments on my first real attempt at watercolour painting, i did this before i discovered this excellent site so having watched the really well presented videos i realise i have a lot to learn but what a fascinating and rewarding hobby i used 140lb cold pressed watercolur paper and a starter set of tubes ,i would appreciate someone explaining what the different grades of paint ,ie student, artist etc bring to the finished painting ,and when is the right time to start buying better quality paints and brushes as i dont want to waste money buying materials that are not going to benifit me many thanks

Thank you James for your comments, you are right, it does look to lean badly. I overdid the perspective a bit and I didn't stretch my paper so the paper is a bit warped, which doesn't help, I have learnt about stretching paper on the site and hopefully it will improve things.

Hi Steve:
This is really great for a first attempt.....just practice, practice, practice. I've been practicing and learning for.......well enough of that :o)
You obviously enjoyed painting with water colours so go for the best paints (artist quality)....best paper and best brushes you can afford. Learn about the different types of watercolor paints......opaque, transparent granular, staining etc.....how to avoid "mud" etc.
Bob's site has a lot of great information.
Good painting,
Mops

i must explain
by: Anonymous

i must explain this picture was posted before the old bridge so the description for both is the same as I didn't think it had actually reached the site, and I sent this with the title the old bridge by mistake bob has very kindly given it a more appropriate title. My photography skills are a bit rough. I must remember to get the picture square in the shot, I have really spoilt this with the grass in the foreground by going back to the painting and meddling.

Nice painting but I notice the structure on the left is vertical but the cottage is leaning to the right. Is it really that way?
