Charlot

Originally from the film 'It's a dog's life'

Canvas on board - 46 x 55cm. I painted this in my art class last May. We had to come up with an idea for the theme 'The Cinema'.

My inspiration came from an old movie magazine and of course, being in France it seemed the perfect subject.

I tried to capture the sadness in the eyes and I like the way the little dog leans against Charlot.

If I painted it again, I would change the position of the arms so I wouldn't have to worry about the hands!

Any tips on painting hands would be very welcome.

I love this , so pensive ....as for hands ...keep doing them and then do them some more . It makes a great exersize to draw your own hands . It's a great way to pass time while waiting for others

Hi Audrey;
I'm old enough to remember the Charley Chaplin films :o( You've really captured the feeling of "lost and alone". Love the facial expressions and the shading on the droopy trousers.

Hands
by: Dorothy, Carluke

Hi Audrey,

Well done this is a lovely painting you've captured the sadness in the figure.

Hands are very difficult to draw, try to study your own hand at several angles.

When I attended a local art group one of the excersises the tutor gave us was to draw the hand that was drawing. Quite a challenge but makes you observe how the fingers held the pencil etc.,

Have a go at it.
