Beautiful by Nature

by Karla
(USA)

This painting is only my 8th painting, done on canvas with oils size of 20 X 16. I am trying to achieve depth an light in this picture. I found the water and capture of light most challenging. I am most pleased with the depth and the lighting on the picture. If I did this picture over I would change the definate "V" at the top of the picture. I love the dramatic color in this particular picture.

Keep in mind my camera is not the best to work with either. Please go easy on me because this is the first I have showed my art, and I a new at oils. I welcome all comments. Thank you Karla USA

Hi Karla:
Your painting is just like a beautiful Chinese Brush painting....or a tapestry. Love it. The white triangle at the top tends to take the eye away from the painting but you are aware of that.I think you'd be very good at Chinese Brush painting.

I don't do the star thing .

I have a good camera and it still does't show my stuff as it really is .

I love the colors and the softness . I don't use oils so I'm not much help . I do agree the you should change the sky and perhaps add blues to it and the water?

Over all I like the painting thanks for sharing it .

Hello Karla

Now I've never worked with oils, but I like this painting, it is vibrant & alive with color, I don't see anything compositionally wrong with the V shape, although perhaps it could be a little wider it helps give this painting a sense of depth and is needed since thier is basically no skyline without it. You've done a nice job...you should be proud of this one!

Even though the water is running, I think it could benefit from some reflections of the colors of the plants and flowers on the embankment. Obviously the reflections wouldn't be sharp, but pulling some of the colors down at the embankment (with vertical brush strokes) would give a nice effect. They could then be overlayed with ripples and breaking water.

Good Attempt

Karla, thanks for sharing your pictures with us. Like everyone - beginner or otherwise - you can only benefit from constructive feedback. Firstly, I like the colours and the softer, subtler tones in the background give the painting depth (which many struggle with at first.

I think you need more darks. You can be quite bold with dark areas when the vegitation is so dense. In between the plants and bushes there would be some very dark areas. Without these darks the picture has a misty feel to it, which is fine but if you want more vibrancy don't be afraid of sronger contrasts between light and darks.
