Autumn Sunset

Autumn Sunset

This is one of my first attempts at water colour. It is only 6" x 4" 140lbs/300gsm cold pressed/not and took me about an hour using a Cotman water colour sketch box which was a Christmas present.

I've only been painting for 3 months and am still finding my way through colour blending and how paint, water and paper react together. I'm very pleased with how the sky turned out (a happy accident) I found getting the reflections in the water the most difficult part of the picture.

This picture came out of my imagination, although it does remond me of a visit I made to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado a few years ago

Hi Janet, What a lovely little painting it is very soft and appealing, for a first attempt well done, I would hang it on my wall!! I find watercolour the most challenging to work with , Just lovely.
Cheers Joyce

Autumn Sunset

Hi Janet:
This is just an excellent painting. ....nice and loose(the technique that gives many people lots of problems)......good depth emphasised by the blue, grey background trees. The tree reflections should perhaps be the same tone as the trees, and I think if you could wipe out a FEW thin varied length horizontal lines across the reflections(leaving the white background)you'd see a better suggestion of water.
Just my thoughts.

P.S Many years ago I used to take the pleasure boat from Swansea to Ilfracombe for a day trip.

Not Bad

I can appreciate this being your 1st atempt, as I also am a beginner. I like your painting, but maybe a little more definition in the trees would help give more contrast. When I think of an autumn sunset, I would think more about some brighter colors too, more of the colors u see in the fall. Mayebe brightening up the sunset with color would also give more definition and contrast. Not bad, keep going!
