How to Paint Apples in Oils

Notice how this quick oil painting sketch is produced in a very loose style - you don't always have to get into tight detail to create a satisfying piece.

In fact, I think one of the best aspects for the beginner is to watch Jerry's technique at the start with the charcoal where he uses very loose, flowing charcoal outlines. He does this by moving his whole arm, not just his hand or wrist. As a result, the drawing has a lovely, natural flow to it.

See also how he applies the paint very simply. He doesn't worry about covering every millimetre of canvas with paint. Letting flecks of raw canvas show through often adds subtle texture and highlights to your work.
