thanks for the tips ...I do pretty much the same thing with water colors which don't have the same blending quality as oils and acrylics . I'll keep on keeping on . Thanks again , Mary

to start with i have only been doing oils for about 2 years .
the method i used was simple i drew a grid on the photo and then a grid on the board and draw the picture.
the first hing i tackled was the background and then the jacket .
next i put all the dark shading in as per picture and then slowly built all the colours up blending as i went along.i think in a portrait the eyes are the most important thing because if you get these wrong the painting does not look right.
the hair i did in burnt umber first and the went over with naples yellow leaving the hair streaky.
