A Favorite Spot

by Jack Hampton
(Goodyear, Arizona, USA)

24" x 30" acrylic painted on canvas using glazing tecniques in order to achieve a luminous sunlit area coming through the trees.

The picture was painted from memory of a place that I used to visit in the woods of North Eastern Ohio. I was always a peaceful place that I shared with a few friends. After nearly 60 years I thought it would be nice to paint it.

My objective was to create a peaceful scene with the sun light streaming through the trees and illuminating the two people by the rushing of the water - always a sound that is soothing.

The log, the streaming sun light, the flowing creek all point to the focal point of the two people (which were purposefully kept small to indicate the granduer of the forest). However, I may need to create some kind of eye-stopper to keep you eye from running off the picture at the bottom.

Constructive critism always appreciated.

Jack.

Stream of life
by: Rich

The stream flows into and out of the painting, much like that memorable time and place came into and out of your life. Thanks for sharing a corner of your memory. Don't change it.

Eye-stopper
by: Dorothy, Carluke

Hi Jack,

I like your painting and the effect you have achieved with the sunlight streaming through the trees.

You mention an eye-stopper to prevent the eye running off the picture. The only thing I can think of is perhaps to darken this area with a deep bluey/green as if the water was pooling but I am not at all sure about this as I like it the way it is but you could perhaps trying painting a trial piece on scrap paper and laying it over just to see if it would work.

Have fun painting,

Dorothy
